The prime minister of Israel said this week that his government is exploring cryptocurrency and blockchain to circumvent possible global sanctions. The opposition said this would make the country an economic pariah, like Iran. The government says the weak outlook has nothing to do with its policies, and its rivals say it has everything to do with them. Dsrupt asked Endlessen Horrorwitz, the venture firm that has spent a decade selling crypto as freedom and has just found a buyer with a foreign ministry, for a view. It replied in capitals.

“A government that fears sanctions is just a founder with a bigger regulator problem, and we have never turned away a founder.”

EARLY IS THE ONLY TIME TO BUY. A sanction is a regulator with a flag. We have spent ten years building tools for getting round regulators and never once had a client with an air force. Pre-evasion is a category. We are naming it.

PARIAH IS A PRICING TERM. It describes a customer whom the incumbents have stopped serving. Government says the outlook has nothing to do with its policies. Opposition says it is all its policies. We hold no view. BOTH CAMPS NEED SOMEWHERE TO PUT THE MONEY.

YES. WE CALL THAT TRANSPARENCY. Evasion on a public ledger is evasion with a receipt. The other side reads it live and saves itself an audit. Nobody has ever had to trust the system, which is why we call it trustless.

The citizens will hold the coin at whatever rate the exchange offers that morning. We take a fee going in and a fee coming out. THE RISK IS DISTRIBUTED. THE FEE IS CONCENTRATED. That is the thesis.

JPMortgage Chasing & Co. will offer the compliant version: the same ledger with a form attached. We respect that. Risk management is on our list of enemies, but it also sells very well, and a bank can wear it.

Endlessen Horrorwitz will announce a fund or portfolio company aimed at cross-border payments for governments facing sanctions, billed as 'sovereign infrastructure'. The manifesto will gain a paragraph on 'the right to be unsanctionable'. Regulators will have no trouble finding the transactions, because every one of them will be on the ledger.

Suspiciously similar reality

Any resemblance to these real stories is entirely the point.
