Cognitive Republic: Democracy Has a Learning Problem — The Long Listen

Season 1, Ep. 5

This episode is the complete reading of my book chapter, 'A democracy unable to learn cannot endure', where I ask (and tentatively answer) the question 'Why do democracies keep making the same mistakes—and what would it take for them to learn?'

In this hour-long edition of Cognitive Republic, I explore how democracies can learn from experience, recognise failure and change course—and why their survival may depend on getting better at it.

This episode brings the earlier releases together in one long listen. Start here if you’re new to Cognitive Republic, or settle in to hear the argument in one sitting.

In future episodes, the Cognitive Republic asks how democracies can notice what is happening, remember what they have learned, judge well and correct course. From there, the podcast ranges across the meeting of brain and world: conversation and memory, information and power, and the forces that shape how we see, think and act together—including cognitive warfare. The book-length project, written in public, provides the spine; each episode can follow a question into the wider terrain where minds, societies and power meet.

What should I take up in a future episode? What has an institution failed to learn? Where have you seen it change course? Send me a question by replying to a Cognitive Republic email or messaging me on Bluesky. Your questions will help shape the running order.
