Google is giving school administrators more control over how artificial intelligence is used in the classroom, but the new policy comes with a significant catch for districts that want to ban the technology entirely. As part of its "AI in the Learning Era 2026" rollout, Google announced Nov. 3 that it is introducing "Guided Learning" capabilities into Google Search and Google Classroom.According to Chris Phillips, Google’s vice president and general manager of education, the feature acts as a digital coach. Instead of providing students with direct final answers to complex topics, the AI will prompt them with step-by-step questions to support critical thinking and problem-solving.Alongside the new tools, the tech giant is giving K-12 school administrators full control to either enable or disable AI products, such as Gemini and Gemini Notebook, on managed student accounts. According to The New York Times, these tools will be turned off by default in early 2027, requiring schools to explicitly opt in.However, because generative AI is now deeply integrated into the core Google Search experience, districts opting to completely block AI tools will lose access to the search engine. Phillips told The Times that students on those restricted accounts "will not have access to search, and they’ll see a message from their school that indicates it’s not available."Google has not released a comprehensive list of which school districts plan to enable the new AI features or which might face losing access to Google Search. It is also unclear how the policy will broadly impact schools that rely heavily on Chromebooks and Google Workspace but wish to restrict generative AI due to academic integrity or data privacy concerns. While already active in Classroom, Google will begin a pilot program for the AI coaching tool in Search at select U.S. schools later this month before expanding it to other districts in the coming months.
