The “snap” in gridiron football is a reverse pass from the center to the quarterback to start play. This action has origins in rugby football as a backward kick to move the ball out of scrimmage to one’s team and signals to both teams that play is underway. This month our rustup snap package was updated to 1.29.2. Just as a snap begins a football play, the rustup snap is a great way to install rustup to manage your Rust toolchains on Linux. Get it today!

Ubuntu 26.10 Rust 1.97 DevContainers now available

DevContainers with Ubuntu 26.10 “Stonking Stingray” and Rust 1.97.1 are now available. They are similar to the Ubuntu 26.04 LTS - Rust 1.93.1 DevContainers with updated packages. While these DevContainers will only be supported for the same duration as Ubuntu 26.10, they are a nice way to develop and test Rust applications on Ubuntu in a sandboxed environment with minimal setup time. Both the Ubuntu 26.04 and Ubuntu 26.10 distro variants now include the lpcli and ubucargo tools.

lpcli - the fastest Launchpad.net client in the world

According to Guiness World Records, the fastest crab in the world is the tropical ghost crab. It can move at speeds up to four meters per second on land. An equally impressive speed is seen by Rust-powered applications like lpcli. lpcli is a Rust library and command line tool that was created to facilitate automation of tasks and workflows that interact with Launchpad. lpcli version 0.3 has been released. It includes hardware-bound token support, OAuth keychain support, and improved command-line argument parsing.

Need a way to model or verify Ubuntu information for your Rust application?

image51024×765 175 KB

Many Rust applications we use for Ubuntu development need information about Ubuntu and the Ubuntu archive. While this information is available in Ubuntu packages like distro-info-data, that requires the package to be installed and the command to be run or the data extracted, a process that could be slow or prone to error. ubuntu-info-rust is a Rust library crate that provides Ubuntu distribution information as static data structures and enums. It is a compile-time source of truth for Ubuntu series, archive pockets, suites, components, machine architectures, and archive locations. The crate performs no network requests and reads no system files.

Improved Ubuntu packaging of Rust crates using ubucargo:

Intermodal shipping containers are a simple, yet effective technology that powers 95% of the world’s trade. Their standardized size, shape, and capacity allow for the efficient transport of goods throughout the world. More than 17 million containers are in use worldwide on ships, railroads, and motor vehicles. Rust software benefits from similar packaging standards. Rust’s crate ecosystem has made it easy to assemble, share, and consume Rust ecosystem software. On Debian and Ubuntu, the Debian source package (.dsc) and Debian binary package (.deb) provide a standardized way to describe and build software packages that comprise a complete multi-ecosystem software distribution. Packaging Rust crates for Debian-style packaging can be challenging and has led to the development of tools such as debcargo to package Rust crates for Debian Linux. Ubuntu Linux has similar needs to package Rust software, but follows different policies to better meet Ubuntu’s Long-Term Support (LTS) requirements. This has led to the development of ubucargo, a tool to assist packaging Rust crates for Ubuntu. ubucargo uses debcargo’s packaging template recommendations, existing Rust crates packaged in the Ubuntu archive, and existing packaging configuration to facilitate the packaging process. Rust crate dependencies are compared to packaged Rust crates in the Ubuntu archive and compatible versions are matched:

This makes it easy to determine what dependencies need to be packaged to get your favorite Rust software added to Ubuntu. Try out ubucargo today and let us know what you think!
