Google’s Fitbit lineup expanded on Monday with the introduction of the Fitbit Edge, a new wearable that’s positioned between the Fitbit Air and Pixel Watch.
Priced at $179.99, it combines the Fitbit Air’s slim band with an OLED display for checking map directions, notifications, weather, and music controls.
Like the Pixel Watch and Fitbit Air, the Edge works with Google Health Coach, powered by Gemini. (You’ll need a Google Health Premium subscription to use it.) The coach can use your fitness, health, and medical information to put together weekly routines and workout plans, then adjust them around your schedule.
It also comes with Google’s Health Guardian feature, which is designed to spot notable changes in health measurements over time, including indicators related to blood pressure and insulin resistance. (The company announced these features at the Pixel Watch 5 launch in August.)
Google says the Fitbit Edge can automatically recognize and log up to 100 activities, including runs, bike rides and walks. The company explains it uses context from your movement to work out what you’re doing and add it to your weekly goals. Plus, the device supports more than 50 exercise modes and can offer on-screen prompts during workouts, such as a nudge to push harder or take a breather.
The Fitbit Edge’s built-in GPS is 40% more accurate than the previous generation, the company claims, which should make it easier to track outdoor runs. Google says sleep-stage detection is also 15% more accurate than on earlier generations, helping the device provide better sleep summaries and coaching tips.
Meanwhile, the battery is rated for up to seven days on a charge, and the wearable is water-resistant to 50 meters.
The Fitbit Edge is available to preorder through the Google Store, with store availability set for October 27.
Color choices include Obsidian, Fog, Olive, and Canyon. There’s also a Stephen Curry Special Edition, priced at $219.99.
