Based on annual births, a birth in the first country (India) is about 175 times as likely as a birth in the second (Taiwan).
Includes child death, poverty, illness, war and loss. This fictional simulation combines a statistical background with game rules; it does not reproduce real-world event rates one for one. Recommended for ages 15 and up.
The game needs JavaScript. You can still read the guide below and choose a language.

In the 1 in 8 billion game, read one life year by year, then decide how to respond at its turning points. The idea of one in 8 billion starts with a birthplace you do not choose; the events, choices and moments you keep make this character’s story.
Start with United States: a closer look, compare living conditions and opportunities in Canada and Mexico, or browse all country baselines. Population, births, health, and education are explained alongside the data's limitations.
Start a new life in the game area at the top of this page. Your birthplace is drawn from 172 countries, weighted by annual births or population. Read the events, choose a focus and respond at turning points. You can pause, change the speed or turn on automatic choices. The country data provides context for this fictional life.
Health, Joy, Mind and Bonds describe the character's changing game state. Read the effect hints under each focus before choosing: studying, time with friends and work can involve different trade-offs. Compare the next events with those changes, and open the profile for country data. Higher scores do not guarantee a particular ending, and country averages remain context rather than an individual forecast.
The game uses a dataset of 172 countries. By default, each country's annual births supply its weight; before a new life, you can instead choose population weights from the same dataset. Both modes begin at age 0, and countries do not have equal 1-in-172 chances. These are the game's model probabilities, not your own probability of being born there.
Start a new life, read the birth certificate and choose a focus as the years pass. Make event choices yourself, or turn on automatic choices. Change the speed, pause to read the timeline and star moments you want to keep. The profile shows the character's circumstances; the final summary looks back over that life.
Country indicators help shape the simulation, while random events and decisions create the story. A national average does not describe every person. The character, lifespan and cause of death are game outcomes, not a prediction of your health, future income or life expectancy.
The data notes cite UN World Population Prospects 2024 and World Bank World Development Indicators (WDI). Complete reference years and original values are not documented for every indicator, so we cannot guarantee that all figures are current or match the databases’ present values. The links below explain the indicators and original statistics; they do not verify every game value.
The existing baseline draws on UN World Population Prospects 2024 and World Bank development indicators, among other public statistics. It combines different reference years; individual observation years and estimation flags were not retained. Consult the original series before using these figures for research or current decisions.
The name evokes one person among eight billion. It is a storytelling scale, not a live population count or a one-in-eight-billion chance of drawing each country. Birthplace odds use annual births or population weights from the 172-country dataset.
No. You can choose weights based on annual births (the default) or population, but you cannot specify a country. A new life draws again and may begin in the same country.
You can play here on the official 1in8B website. Return to the game area at the top of the page to start a life. It is free in your browser, with no app download or account required.
